Lawmakers in the State of Illinois and City of Chicago recognize the vulnerability of bicyclists who share roadways with motorized vehicles and have adopted legislation to promote the safety of cyclists. Below are excerpts from the Chicago Municipal Code and Illinois Statutes that commonly form the basis of bike injury lawsuits.
Illinois’ laws applicable to bicycle safety can be found in the Illinois Compiled Statutes Section 605 ILCS 5/ Illinois Highway Code.
Chicago has additional laws concerning bicycle safety which are found in the Municipal Code of Chicago, Title 9: Vehicles, Traffic and Rail Transportation.
